What To Do Before Getting Hair Extensions Fitted

Getting hair extensions fitted is an exciting way to add length, volume, and confidence to your look. To achieve the best possible results and protect the health of your natural hair, preparation is key. Here’s everything you should do before your appointment.

1. Book a Consultation First Before your fitting appointment, schedule a consultation with your stylist. This allows your extension specialist to: Assess your natural hair condition Recommend the best extension method for your hair type Match the extension colour perfectly Discuss your desired length and style Explain maintenance and aftercare A consultation helps ensure your extensions look natural and feel comfortable.

2. Arrive With Clean Hair Wash your hair thoroughly 24 hours before your appointment using a clarifying shampoo if recommended by your stylist. Avoid: Heavy conditioners Hair oils Leave-in products Dry shampoo Clean hair allows the extensions to bond properly and last longer.

3. Avoid Cutting or Colouring Your Hair Last Minute If you plan to colour your hair, do it before your extension fitting appointment. This helps your stylist match the extensions accurately and avoids unnecessary stress on the hair afterwards. It’s also best to avoid major haircuts immediately before fitting unless advised by your stylist.

4. Detangle Your Hair Thoroughly Make sure your hair is brushed and free from knots before your appointment. Tangled hair can slow down the fitting process and make application more difficult.

5. Know Which Extension Method You Want There are several types of hair extensions available, including: Tape-in extensions Nano rings Micro rings Keratin bond extensions Weave or sew-in extensions Your stylist can recommend the best option based on your hair texture, lifestyle, and desired result.

6. Wear Comfortable Clothing Some extension appointments can take several hours depending on the method being fitted. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid high-neck tops that may get in the way during application.

7. Prepare for Aftercare Before your fitting, make sure you have the right aftercare products at home, including: Sulphate-free shampoo Extension-safe conditioner Soft bristle brush Heat protection spray Proper aftercare helps keep both your extensions and natural hair healthy. 8. Understand the Maintenance Commitment Hair extensions require regular maintenance appointments, usually every 6–10 weeks depending on the method used. Before getting extensions fitted, be prepared for: Daily brushing Correct washing routines Night-time hair protection

Maintenance appointments Following professional advice will help your extensions stay looking beautiful for longer.

Look After Your Locks

Maintenance
When having hair extensions, they must be maintained and checked every 6-8 weeks by your hair extension specialist. This is a vital part of aftercare to ensure no damage is done to your natural hair or the extensions. You may lose 10-15 strands of hair during this period, but these can be reused at your fitting appointment. Removal of extensions must be performed by a trained hair extension specialist to prevent damage.

Washing, heat and sleep
We always recommend using Capelli products which are sulphate free as ordinary products can shorten the lifespan and quality of the extensions. Try not to wash extensions more than twice a week as this can dry out your extensions and cause stress on both them and your natural hair. When washing, try not rub the extensions but gently massage the recommended shampoo into the hair. Only apply conditioner from the mid lengths to the ends of the hair, this is because using conditioner at the root can cause the bonds to slip. Lightly press extensions with a towel when finished. Always be extra cautious brushing hair when it’s wet. Heat tools such as straighteners, hairdryers and curling wands are fine to use but you must use heat protection to protect your hair and the extensions from drying and damage.  Always avoid the top of extensions when applying any kind of heat as this can damage the bonds.
Never let the extensions air dry as this may cause matting and make the hair difficult to brush. Try styling the hair in a loose plait to avoid matting. Using a silk pillowcase can also help reduce tangling.

Brushing and Separating
Always ensure you use a hair extension brush or a tangle teaser. Always be gentle and hold the top of the extensions when brushing to prevent pulling on the hair. Make sure you are separating the strands of hair often at the root. This helps to avoid any matting.

Colouring Hair:

We do not recommend colouring the extensions. In doing this it could cause drying of the hair, and the lifespan of the hair may be shortened. Your own hair can be coloured while you have extensions in as long as it doesn’t touch the bonds or roots of extensions. We advise to only have your T – section coloured if necessary.

Holidays and Swimming:
We do not recommend you go swimming whist having extensions, if you do make sure you plait the hair and try to keep them dry. If they do end up getting wet, use a conditioning treatment as salt and chlorine can dry out the hair or cause them to become discoloured. This is not a fault with the hair but the minerals and chemicals in the water.
